What began as a catch-up coffee with two important women in my life turned into a discussion about needs. And no, I'm not going to go all Maslow on you right now. It's actually a fairly messy topic if you think about it. Basic needs might be defined as food and clothing. But as humans with hearts and desires and feelings, do we have other needs that must be met if life is not to feel empty? Do we have the right to have expectations of those closest to us?

In the world of giving career advice, we tell people to follow their dreams – to create a vision, set goals around it, and just do it. Two of my favorite questions to ask are, “What keeps you up late talking?” and “Where do you head first in a bookstore?” I find that much of the time, people need to dream bigger dreams.

My life has felt fairly out of control lately. I’m really good at running in circles and jumping through hoops. And if I were a golden retriever, that might be all well and good. The problem is (deep breath here)…that I get a lot done, but nothing feels very purposeful. And that’s a hard pill to swallow for someone like me who really is passionate about living a “Life on Purpose.”

So as we have turned over a new decade, I've been asking myself, "What does it look like to live an intentional life?"

Presenter Bios:

John M. Wheeler
John is an executive consultant to CEO's and owners of businesses ranging in size from two to forty million in annual revenues. For the past eight years the focus of his consulting has been organizational and key leader development, with an emphasis on business culture as a critical success factor to long-term sustainable growth and value creation. He has served as the Chair of the San Diego Convene group for over six years leading Christian CEO's in the process of building successful companies that take social responsibility to a much higher level.

Previous responsibilities include sixteen years as a business banker and investment sales manager which has provided a fundamental understanding of financial disciplines and real world perspective to the consulting process. He has served as Treasurer for a non-profit organization for eight years, as well as board positions in several organizations including three years as an elder and five years as a deacon at his church. He completed his Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana in May 1982.

John has been living and working in the San Diego area since 1983. He has been married for over 20 years and has four children, two in high school and two in middle school. The entire family is active in sports and in the summer time they enjoy surfing and other beach related activities. John's coaching activities include club basketball teams in the community recreational programs.
